ish and chips, a quintessential British dish, is a beloved combination of crispy, battered fish and golden, fluffy fries. This iconic meal has delighted taste buds for generations, offering a delightful contrast of textures and flavors that make it a classic comfort food enjoyed worldwide.

Fish and chips is a classic dish that's loved for its crispy fried fish and golden fries. Here's how to make it at home with this easy recipe:

For the fish:

  • 4 white fish fillets, such as pollock, haddock, or cod
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup cold sparkling water or beer
  • Oil for frying (vegetable oil or canola oil will be good choice)

For the chips (fries):

  • 4 large potatoes, peeled and cut into thick strips
  • Oil for frying
  • Salt to taste

Prepare the Chips (Fries):

To get rid of extra starch, rinse the potato strips in cold water. After that, use paper towels to dry them.
Heat oil in a deep fryer or a large pot to about 325-350°F (165-175°C).
Fry the potato strips in batches for about 4-5 minutes until they're lightly golden and cooked through but not browned. Remove and drain on paper towels. While you're preparing the fish, let them cool.

Prepare the Fish:

Pat the fish fillets dry with paper towels to remove excess moisture.

Mix the flour, baking powder and salt in a bowl. Gradually whisk in the sparkling water or beer until the batter is smooth.

Heat oil in a deep frying pan or skillet to around 350-375°F (175-190°C).

Dip each fish fillet in the batter, letting the excess drip off.

Once the oil is hot, carefully drop the coated fillets in. Fry for about 4-5 minutes on each side until they turn golden brown and the fish is cooked through.

Once cooked, remove the fish from the oil and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to absorb excess oil.

Serve the fish and chips hot, sprinkled with salt if desired. Serve with your favorite condiments like tartar sauce, malt vinegar, or ketchup.

Maintain the oil temperature while frying to ensure crispy results.

For an extra crispy coating on the fish, you can lightly dust the fish fillets with flour before dipping them in the batter.

Serve with sides like mushy peas or coleslaw for a complete meal.

Enjoy your homemade fish and chips!
